3D BODY SCANNING

What is 3D scanning?

3D scanning is the process of capturing the three-dimensional shape of a physical object (a human body, for example) to create a digital 3D model.
Unlike traditional photography, which records a flat image from a single viewpoint, 3D scanning records the full surface geometry of the object, resulting in a digital file that represents its shape and proportions in three dimensions.

Our areas of expertise

3D scanning and analysis of people for fashion/apparel/costume/art applications

3D scanning for dress forms

In the context of dress form production, 3D body scanning involves more than recording surface geometry. The experience of the technician plays an important role: from selecting the scanning pose and guiding the client through the scan to processing the resulting data with an understanding of how to handle body areas that are critical for fitting. All of these elements define how helpful the resulting dress form will be.

3D scanning for software

3D scanning for the creation of a digital avatar follows its own set of requirements. A key factor is understanding how avatar and visualization software interprets mesh structure, topology, and surface continuity. Scan data must be prepared with these constraints in mind to ensure the resulting 3D model performs correctly in virtual fashion and pattern-making applications.

3D scanning for R&D

3D scanning is a powerful tool for data acquisition and analysis. Exploring fit across different body types, analyzing changes over time, and gaining insights into the effects of shapewear can drive better product design and provide clothing brands with a competitive edge. It also allows designers to make informed decisions based on precise measurements and real-world body data, rather than assumptions or averages.

3D scanning for ART

Capturing precise three-dimensional data of historical objects enables detailed study and long-term preservation. Similarly, digitizing the first drafts of future art pieces opens new possibilities for creators, allowing them to experiment, iterate, and share their work in ways that were not possible with traditional methods. 3D scanning supports both the conservation of cultural heritage and the exploration of new creative approaches.

About 3D scanning process

We use engineering-grade 3D scanner to capture the body geometry with precision

taking 3D body scan

Step 1: In-person appointment

Visit our scanning studio in Los Angeles, or schedule scanning at your location. The session takes 30–90 minutes. The appointment is efficient and comfortable from start to finish. All the client needs to do is to stand still for 3-5 minutes. The scanning technician will walk around the person, capturing the geometry data.

We use engineering-grade equipment because phone scans do not yet meet our accuracy standards.
However, for clients who cannot be present for an in-person appointment we have other ways to create their 3D model. Please contact us for more information.

Step 2: Review and feedback

We prepare the 3D model for client’s specific application. Process typically includes smoothing the undergarments lines, clearing out underarms and crotch areas, and other minor edits. After client’s review and feedback, we finalize the 3D model making sure that it meets client’s requirements.

Once the 3D model is ready it can be used as a Digital Avatar or for ordering the physical dress form from us.

How we capture a 3D body scan

About

For our scanning process we utilize the Artec Eva Light 3D scanner, a professional-grade engineering tool.

During the 3D scan, the client is asked to stand still for 2–5 minutes while breathing normally. The scanning technician moves around the client, holding the scanner approximately 2–3 feet from the body’s surface to capture the necessary data.

Medical Considerations

The scanning process is completely safe unless you have specific contraindications to either flashing lights or to standing for a few minutes. Please see Medical Considerations page for more information.

How long does a 3D scan for dress form or for a digital avatar takes?

A typical appointment takes approximately one hour for a torso scan and 1–1.5 hours for a full body scan. During the appointment, we complete 3–4 scanning sessions, each lasting 2–5 minutes. Between sessions, you can relax while the collected data is saved and reviewed. We also take a few tape measurements to cross-check some areas and to capture reference values related to breathing and range of movement.

We make sure that our clients have the best possible experience with our 3D scan and feel. We had a pleasure to work with a wide range of clients and we tailor our approach to their specific needs.
